In December 2020, news broke of a mega cyber attack that targeted more than 40 companies, United States government agencies, and think tanks. Reports indicated that the attackers, believed to be state-sponsored, succeeded in embedding a back door into SolarWinds’ network monitoring software, used by the government, Fortune 500 companies, and firms monitoring critical infrastructure.

This recent attack, which threat researchers have named, Sunburst, is typical of what has become known as a Generation V cyber attack. Researchers believe that the Sunburst attack is so sophisticated that it could take years to fully comprehend its impact.
