HBO’s popular Game of Thrones (GoT) series was already one of the most pirated TV programs of all time, then came the data breaches. In 2015, cyber attackers leaked 4 episodes of season 5 online. Next, HBO Nordic and HBO España accidentally exposed an episode of season 6 GoT that quickly spread through social media. In 2017 cyber attackers calling themselves The Mr. Smith Group first stole 1.5 terabytes of data from HBO’s U.S. servers asking for an extortion payment to stop them from leaking programs to the public. The group then upped their claim saying they had data breached all of HBO’s data, a full 5 terabytes.

More recently, another cyber attack group calling itself OurMine hacked HBO’s social media accounts by likely stealing user logon credentials. HBO joins other multinational entertainment companies that have been the victim of data breaches and extortion
